A case where a 6-year0old boy was dragged to court over picking a tulip at his bus stop, in North Carolina, has now gotten national attention.
The case was spotlighted by Virginia Bridges in a piece for the Herald-Sun. The piece describes the young boy’s feet dangling as he sat with his counsel. It also describes his attorney, Julie Boyer, giving him a coloring book and crayons to “color a picture” during the proceedings.
Due to regional law, the mother of the boy was not able to attend the intake meeting, forcing him to face the judge by himself. Once the judge found out what the trial was over, he did dismiss the case.
However, social justice groups and other organizations are now taking action. Organizations like the National Juvenile Justice Network are pushing for the age requirements regarding juvenile proceedings be raised.
